As New York City children settle back to school this fall, we are heartened to see their joy at being together again with their friends, they are bonding in the classroom and in the afterschool space. But beneath the surface, all is not well. Children here and across the country are grappling with the damaging effects of the pandemic. Recent tests by the National Assessment of Educational Progress – the “nation’s report card” – showed a two-year reading and math decline among 9-year-olds, wiping out 20 years of gains. Children of color in lower-income neighborhoods lost the most. Black students' math declined almost three times that of White students. And then there is parental loss. Black and Hispanic children, living in lower-income households, were twice as likely to lose a parent or a grandparent. - [Partnership with Children awarded the UHC Empowering Health grant!](https://partnershipwithchildren.org/partnership-with-children-featured-on-pix11-news-3-2-2/): Through a $275,000 Empowering Health grant, UnitedHealthcare will make it possible for Partnership with Children to infuse the healing power of the arts, including trauma-informed arts programming, in 11 school-based mental health programs citywide. We commit to being life-long learners and advocates in creating and sustaining an antiracist organizational culture. We believe that systemic racism is a form of trauma that our staff must understand in order to provide effective counseling and community support services at our schools. We prioritize culturally-responsive education and strive to elevate the voices of our students and those who have been marginalized or silenced. - [2019 TCS New York City Marathon](https://partnershipwithchildren.org/2019-tcs-new-york-city-marathon/): Team PWC runners receive guaranteed entry to the 2019 TCS New York City Marathon and raise crucial funds to help vulnerable children overcome the chronic stress of growing up in poverty. They looked so happy and confident, chatting together. She almost walked past, but she watched as the girls sat down at a table full of delicious looking food. “I welcomed myself in,” says Selina, and she marvels, “By walking into that room that day, I had no idea that I was getting back on my road to success.” - [SEKENYA](https://partnershipwithchildren.org/success-stories/1790/): Sekenya started attending Rockaway Collegiate High School in Brooklyn, NY during his junior year. Rockaway Collegiate is in a neighborhood where 100% of the students qualify for public assistance. An introverted young man, Sekenya admits, “I would show up and walk through the metal detector every day, spending most of my time trying to stay below the radar—unseen, unheard.” Sekenya was frequently tardy and missed classes. “I wasn’t on track to graduate, and I wasn’t motivated to make a change.” - [ERICA](https://partnershipwithchildren.org/success-stories/erica/): The decision to become a social worker for Erica came from working with one student and his family when she was 13 years old. Erica says that her experiences growing up in the projects and attending inner-city schools allows her to “relate to the students while also being that role model who tells them that there’s more out there than where you came from”. ## Projects - [Organize fundraising activities for charity Annual](https://partnershipwithchildren.org/project/organize-fundraising-activities-for-charity-annual/): Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text.
