Community School Americorps Member

Partnership with Children provides critical counseling, school-wide services, and family and community outreach in high-poverty, New York City public schools so students can reach their full potential. The ideal Americorps member is a self-starter, who is passionate about social justice, and committed to empowering students, families, schools and communities. The Americorps member will be based in one of our 15 community schools, and serve as a “Success Mentor” reporting to the Community School Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate a “Success Mentors” program for students, to improve school attendance
  • Work closely with school principals and Community School Directors to identify students who are chronically absent
  • Recruit and train volunteer mentors, and oversee mentor-mentee engagement
  • Mentor a caseload of chronically absent students by serving as a ‘coach’ and ‘sounding board’
  • Conduct home visits
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Passion for working in high-needs communities, and experience working with children or in a school-setting preferred
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment, flexible, organized and can-do attitude
  • Strong communication skills
  • Bilingual (Spanish) a plus
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Google Docs
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or lawful permanent resident, and able to pass criminal background check

Hours:

  • The Americorps commitment will start in August 2017 and go through June 30, 2018
  • Full-time (1,700 hours) OR Part-time (900 hours) total

Stipend and Benefits:
Americorps members will receive a stipend and other benefits through the Americorps program, including:

  • Living allowance of up to $14,300 (pre-tax) for approximately 10 months of service

  • $5,815 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon completion of the program

  • Student loan forbearance or deferment on eligible loans while in service
